Located in the heart of the Balkan mountain, famous for its divine nature, Vratza, as it was written in a newspaper in 1858, is a place “………….”
Vratza is the place where the mountain starts from the main square. This unique combination of urban and mountain areas makes the town a perfect tourist spot. One of its greatest advantages is the opportunity to visit so many natural, cultural and historical sights in such a small region.
Until recently Vratza was known mostly for the Ledenika cave, the Rogozen treasure and Okolchitza – the place where Hristo Botev died. However, there is much more to be seen, starting with the largest historical museum in south-west Bulgaria, where, apart from the Rogozen treasure, you cal also see the treasure of the Mogilan mound, the oldest skeleton ever found in Europe and many other archeological finds.
The ethnographic museum and the two medieval towers situated near the main square are also worth visiting. Once you reach the square you can go to the rest house located above the city by simply following the steps. It will not take more than 10 minutes but the panoramic view is worth the effort. There, you can visit the museum for free or have a drink at the coffee house.
Reaching the Chaika hotel from the main square will take about 15 minutes. Once you leave in that direction, you will forget about the town and find yourselves in the amazing park, surrounded by 600-metre-high rocks. About 300 metres form the hotel in the direction of Sgorigrad, you will reach the Vratza pass – a favourite place for mountain-climbers.
One of the first settlers here were the Thracians, who 16 centuries ago settled exactly here and founded the first village which Vratza derives from. A park will be established in the Gradishteto area, where some archeological excavations have been taking place recently. There, the visitors will have the chance to see the discovered fortified walls, buildings and artifacts.
